Professor Sprout’s Greenhouse

Experience Professor Sprout’s Greenhouse

The greenhouse is a fan-favourite set from the Harry Potter film series, where students were taught their Herbology lessons with Professor Pomona Sprout. Built by the original filmmakers, the greenhouse stands at 50-feet long and features an interactive display of magical plants and props, which fans will recognise from iconic scenes seen on screen.

Explore the Studio Tour Set

Visiting the Studio Tour, and walking in the footsteps of the Harry Potter characters, visitors will have the chance to take photos whilst pulling out a potted Mandrake for themselves. The Venomous Tentacula, featured in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, can also be spotted hanging from the ceiling of the greenhouse.

During shooting, filmmakers used various creative techniques to produce the unusual movements of the greenhouse’s enchanting plants. Whilst computer-generated effects were used to create the grasping motion of the Tentacula’s tendrils, the squirming Mandrakes were achieved using animatronic controllers hidden beneath the table.

Bringing the Plants to Life

Fans of filmmaking will be able to learn more about creature effects and the scale models and CGI used throughout the film series in the Studio Tour’s Creatures Workshop. Professor Sprout’s Greenhouse set alone was home to more than 100 mechanical Mandrakes during filming for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, requiring innovative approaches and creativity to bring the magical creatures to life on screen.

Step into Professor Sprout’s Greenhouse, found in the Backlot at the Studio Tour, and experience Hogwarts’ famous Herbology lessons. Don’t forget your earmuffs!
